Yoga & Bhakti: How Love for God Completes the Yogic Path

πΊ Uniting Devotion with Discipline for True Liberation
Welcome back, seekers of truth and Sanatan wisdom!
In our previous blog, we explored Yoga’s Vedic origins, practical applications, the science of energy centers, and the cosmic purpose of Kundalini awakening. In this Blog, we venture into the most beautiful, emotional, and heart-opening dimension of Yoga — Bhakti Yoga, the Yoga of Divine Love.
ποΈ If Kundalini is the flame, Bhakti is the fragrance.
If knowledge is the map, devotion is the destination.
Let’s explore how Bhakti Yoga makes the yogic path complete, personal, and transformative.
π§βοΈ yoga is incomplete without bhakti
Many believe yoga is just about stretching, breathwork, or mental control. But Sanatan Dharma teaches something deeper:
“Yat karoshi yad ashnasi yaj juhoshi dadasi yat
Yat tapasyasi kaunteya tat kurushva madarpanam.”
— Bhagavad Gita 9.27
(Whatever you do, offer it to Me.)
This verse transforms all yoga into Bhakti Yoga — every action as an offering to the Divine.
πͺ Without Bhakti, yoga is dry discipline.
With Bhakti, yoga becomes divine surrender.
π what is bhakti yoga?
Bhakti Yoga is the path of pure love and surrender to God. Unlike other forms of yoga that may focus on intellect or discipline, Bhakti focuses on the heart.
It is not about knowing God, but loving God.
There are 9 classical forms of Bhakti described in Srimad Bhagavatam (7.5.23):
No. | Form of Bhakti | Description |
---|---|---|
1οΈβ£ | Shravanam | Hearing divine stories (e.g., Ramayan, Bhagavatam) |
2οΈβ£ | Kirtanam | Singing God’s name and glories |
3οΈβ£ | Smaranam | Remembering the Divine constantly |
4οΈβ£ | Padasevanam | Serving the Divine's feet (service to devotees) |
5οΈβ£ | Archanam | Ritual worship and puja |
6οΈβ£ | Vandanam | Offering prayers and prostrations |
7οΈβ£ | Dasyam | Being God’s servant with humility |
8οΈβ£ | Sakhyam | Loving God as a friend |
9οΈβ£ | Atmanivedanam | Complete surrender of the self |
Each of these is a powerful Yogic practice in itself!
ποΈ bhakti yoga and the heart chakra (anahata)
In our previous post, we discussed the Anahata Chakra—the heart center.
This is where Bhakti awakens.
-
When Kundalini Shakti rises to this level, the practitioner feels unconditional love.
-
Bhakti Yoga helps clear emotional blockages, replacing pain with compassion.
π Love is the only force that can disarm the ego, purify the mind, and open the gateway to the Divine.
π great bhaktas who walked the yoga path
Sanatan Dharma is rich with examples of devotees who became yogis through love:
πΏ 1. Hanuman Ji – The Bhakti Warrior
The perfect example of Dasyam Bhakti. Though strong like Shiva, Hanuman’s heart is full of Rama’s love. He never performed asanas, but his entire being was a living yoga—devotion in action.
π» 2. Meera Bai – The Lover of Krishna
Her songs were her sadhana. She left palaces and riches for spiritual union with Shyam. Her Bhakti led to Samadhi and liberation.
π 3. Prahlad – Child Devotee of Narayana
In the face of torture, he never stopped chanting Vishnu’s name. His Bhakti was fearless and pure—his yoga was surrender.
These saints teach us: You don’t need advanced poses or deep philosophy—just deep love.
𧬠how bhakti purifies karma and mind
Here’s how Bhakti Yoga aligns with other yogic paths:
π₯ 1. Karma Yoga + Bhakti
When action is offered to God, it becomes selfless (Nishkam Karma).
No attachment. No ego. Only devotion.
π§ 2. Jnana Yoga + Bhakti
Bhakti melts the pride of intellect. Even great Jnanis like Shankaracharya praised Krishna and Shiva with deep devotion.
π§ 3. Raja Yoga + Bhakti
Dhyana (meditation) becomes easy when the heart is filled with love.
Rather than focusing on an abstract idea, Bhaktas meditate on Krishna’s smile, Shiva’s dance, or Ram’s lotus feet.
ποΈ All paths ultimately merge in Bhakti. Even Shiva meditates on Rama. Even Krishna praises Radha’s love.
πͺ daily bhakti yoga practice (even for beginners)
You don’t need to become a renunciate or abandon your life.
Bhakti can be woven into your daily routine:
ποΈ Morning (Brahma Muhurta)
-
Light a diya πͺ and chant Gayatri Mantra or Om Namah Shivaya
-
Read 1 verse of Bhagavad Gita or Ramcharitmanas
π΅ During the Day
-
Play Kirtan or Bhajans while working
-
Do Japa mala of your Ishta Devata (1 round = 108 times)
π Evening
-
Offer incense, water, and flowers to your altar
-
Say a heartfelt thank you to God for the day
π Before Sleep
-
Mentally repeat your mantra
-
Sleep with God’s name on your lips β€οΈ
ποΈ bhakti as a path for kali yuga
In the Kali Yuga, scriptures say the easiest path to liberation is:
Naam Sankirtan – Chanting the Divine Name
That’s why saints like Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Namdev, Tulsidas, and Kabir emphasized Bhakti and Naam Smaran.
No complex rituals. No renunciation. Just Nama Jap and love.
Even if you slip, Bhakti lifts you again.
Even if your karma is heavy, Bhakti dissolves it.
π« the real success of yoga is union — and bhakti is the bridge
Ultimately, the word Yoga means union—with the Supreme Self.
-
Asanas prepare the body
-
Pranayama purifies the breath
-
Meditation calms the mind
-
But it is Bhakti that opens the door to God’s heart
You may conquer the breath, sit in deep Samadhi, or chant mantras for years…
But if your heart lacks Bhakti, the soul remains untouched.
Conversely, a simple villager chanting “Ram Ram” with pure love may reach God faster than a scholar with no Bhakti.
π conclusion: the final step is love
Dear reader, you now know that Yoga is not just a set of exercises—it’s a sacred journey back to God.
And Bhakti Yoga is the most accessible, emotional, and powerful tool you have.
-
You don’t need to be perfect—just honest and devoted.
-
You don’t need rituals—just remembrance.
-
You don’t need knowledge—just longing for the Divine.
πΊ “Prem se bada na yog koi, na gyΔn, na tapasya.
Jisne Ishwar ko prem diya, usne sab kuch paa liya.”
(There is no Yoga greater than love. One who gives love to God, receives everything.)
